Palliative Care is about providing holistic support to people whose illness has been diagnosed as terminal. Palliative Care facilitates, to the extent possible, the decisions of the patient for comfort, activity and place of death. The Townsville Hospital Palliative Care Service provides a range of services to meet these needs, including the Palliative Care Volunteer Home Visiting Service.
Palliative Care Home Visitors provide patients, their family and their carers with practical and social support in a variety of ways. This includes such things as helping with shopping and similar tasks, companionship for patients, and respite for family carers.
As the name suggests, the Palliative Care Volunteer Home Visiting Service comprises a group of about 30 highly motivated and community-minded voluntary workers who are specially trained in palliative care in the home. Because the needs of the community far outweighs the available resources, the Home Visiting Service is currently seeking interested candidates for training. The next annual training course is scheduled for September. Initial requirements are nothing more than some weekday availability and access to transport - no special prior knowledge is required.
For further information on becoming a Palliative Care Home Visitor, please contact:

The Australian Government and National Seniors Association have joined forces to encourage Australia's senior citizens to volunteer their time, skills and experience to work with remote Indigenous communities.
The 'Senior Volunteers for Indigenous Communities' initiative was launched at the National Seniors Conference on the Gold Coast on the 26 November 2006 by Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister, Mal Brough.
"The projects to be undertaken through this partnership will provide an opportunity for senior Australians to work hand-in-hand with Indigenous people and to build long-term, lasting relationships" Mr. Brough said.
"We want to build on the success of the Indigenous Community Volunteers Program and provide opportunities for senior Australians to use their significant expertise, skills and life experiences to provide practical assistance to remote Indigenous communities".
The Australian government has committed $300,000 to the initiative which will start in 2007.
Volunteers will receive language training and cross-cultural induction.
Any senior Australians interested in being involved should contact:
